A Whiff of Truth: The Missing Link in Aging and Quality of Life

A Whiff of Truth: The Missing Link in Aging and Quality of Life

Reconnecting Body, Mind, and Soul in the Aging Journey

What happened to the connection between body, mind, and soul in how we approach aging? When did “quality of life” slip behind the endless cycle of medications, appointments, procedures, and tests? Somewhere along the way, we stopped asking the most human question of all:

How does a person experience life?

For more than 30 years, my work—and the mission behind Smelling Pink—has focused on bringing awareness back to the power of the senses. And it all starts with one overlooked sense: our sense of smell.

Why Olfaction Matters More Than We Realize

Olfaction is one of the most underused and undervalued senses in everyday life. Many people move through their routines on autopilot. Consider the morning coffee ritual: we chase caffeine, yet often miss the aroma—the very thing that shapes the taste and creates those five quiet minutes of pleasure.

This daily ritual is a reminder:

Aroma can add joy, grounding, and meaning to a moment.
And it begins with a simple whiff.

A Personal Story: Watching My Sister Fade

My understanding of scent’s importance deepened profoundly while watching my sister in long-term care. Once lively, sharp, and full of energy, she is slowly disappearing before my eyes.

The first sign wasn’t cognitive decline—it was the loss of her sense of smell.

I noticed it in the hospital after her devastating car accident. As a perfumer, I would bring new scents for her to explore. What once evoked strong, joyful reactions slowly faded into confusion… and then silence.

Her diminishing olfaction preceded her emotional and cognitive decline.

The Missing Question in Long-Term Care Intake

During her long-term care admission, I was shocked. The staff asked all the usual questions—her hobbies, food preferences, medications, treatments—but no one asked whether she could smell, or how well.

Yet smell is directly tied to the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain that influences:

  • Memory

  • Mood

  • Safety and comfort

  • Experience of pleasure

  • Emotional connection

This isn’t just a missed question.
It’s a missed foundation of care.

Our ability to smell is central to true “centre-based care” or emotional-based care.
Without assessing this sense, we overlook one of our strongest pathways to comfort, connection, and quality of life.

From Design to Scent Therapy: A New Approach to Aging

Before founding Smelling Pink and creating scent therapy, my career was rooted in the design world, integrating scent into architectural and interior experiences. Many design and architecture teams I worked with assessed a space through all five senses and always asked:

“How does scent impact this room?”

Today, I am asking a deeper question:

How does scent impact the everyday moments that make up a life?

The First Five Seconds: Why Smell Matters

So much of our emotional world is shaped in the first few seconds of sensory input—especially smell.
What if we paid attention to those first five seconds?

  • What could change in long-term care?

  • How might dementia patients feel more grounded?

  • Could anxiety lessen?

  • Could appetite increase?

  • Could sleep improve?

  • Could quality of life actually rise—with something as small as a whiff?

Research consistently shows that smell is undervalued in healthcare, despite being the sense most closely linked to emotion and memory. In a world with more screen time, more isolation, and rising mental health challenges, scent may be an untapped key to reconnection.

A Single Whiff Could Change Everything

What happens if we simply begin with one question:

“How does this smell make me feel?”

From that question, entire pathways open—pathways to connection, comfort, emotional regulation, and meaningful daily experiences.

This is the heart of scent therapy.
This is the mission of Smelling Pink.
This is the missing link in aging.
