Discover how Tracy Pepe, innovator behind Smelling Pink, uses scent to transform dementia care and empower caregivers with resilience and purpose.
What if your sense of smell could change lives? For me, scent isn’t just a sense—it’s a superpower. I’m Tracy Pepe, and I created Smelling Pink because I believe smell is the most underestimated form of communication. From a TED Talk stage to long-term care homes across Canada, I’ve dedicated my life to unlocking how scent can improve mental health, dementia care, and emotional wellbeing.

What Is Smelling Pink?
Smelling Pink is a scent therapy program I created to bring wellness, calm, and cognitive support into long-term care homes, especially for residents with dementia. It’s not aromatherapy—it’s a person first system that explores scent communication, a system that helps staff, families, and residents use smell to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and foster memory recall.

My superpower is understanding how scent impacts the brain and communicating it in ways that are informative, meaningful, and transformative. This gift wasn’t something I studied in a lab—it was learned through living.
My sister has bipolar schizophrenia. My son is on the autism spectrum. Two people I love deeply, two very different kinds of care—and one unifying truth: caregiving requires more than love. It requires resilience, creativity, and regeneration.
Caring for them taught me about triggers, emotional regulation, and behavioral nuance. But what helped me connect and communicate most wasn’t words—it was scent. A hint of jasmine, a whiff of peppermint, or the grounding depth of vetiver became my tools. And that’s when it clicked: this is my why. I could use scent not only to care—but to teach others how to care better, too.
My lived experience helped me create evidence-informed scent protocols for long-term care homes. I see scent not just as a sensory tool, but as a bridge—especially for those who can no longer speak or advocate for themselves. Every week, I witness how scent can calm a resident, spark a smile, or help someone with dementia reconnect to a long-lost memory. That’s the magic of Smelling Pink.
Caregivers give endlessly—but often forget to give to themselves. I’ve been there. That’s why I’ve created simple, sensory rituals for caregivers to fill their own cup:
- A few drops of jasmine oil on a pillow for restful sleep
- A cotton ball with eucalyptus in the car to reduce stress
- Vetiver paired with meditation to reset after long days
These aren’t luxuries. They’re essential tools for emotional resilience.

FAQ About Smelling Pink
What is the difference between aromatherapy and scent therapy?
Aromatherapy typically focuses on the use of essential oils for healing purposes. It often involves direct application to the skin, inhalation, or diffusion and is rooted in traditional or folk medicine practices—many of which are not supported by modern research. Scent therapy, as practiced through Smelling Pink, takes a different approach. It uses scent as a language—a form of non-verbal communication between the brain and body that fosters emotional connection, memory stimulation, and well-being. Rather than focusing on essential oils for physical healing, scent therapy uses scent for smelling to create meaningful sensory experiences that support cognitive and emotional health.
Is there science behind this?
Yes. We work with research institutes and care homes to gather data on how scent impacts memory, anxiety, and sleep in dementia care.
Can I bring this program to my care home?
Absolutely. We offer full implementation training, staff resources, and ongoing support.
