Discover how Smelling Pink uses scent therapy to reconnect with memories, reduce isolation, and create calming moments, inspired by a deeply personal story.
Scent has the unique power to transport us across time and space. Recently, as a perfumer, I was asked to create a custom scent for the study of a home — a space meant to feel calming, low-vibration, and serene.
For me, designing a scent is deeply personal, especially when the aromas I work with are tied to my own scent memory — specifically, the aroma of my father’s pipe tobacco. This blend of cigar leaf, burgundy, patchouli, and vetiver instantly brings me back to moments I cherish.
This is the magic of scent therapy: it doesn’t just smell good; it connects us to our emotions, our loved ones, and even our most hidden memories. This is why I do the work I do — because with a single whiff, I can transport myself back in time to see, feel, hear, and remember my father.

What is Scent Therapy?
Scent therapy is the intentional use of aromas to influence emotions, mental clarity, and memory recall. At Smelling Pink, we carefully craft signature scents using natural and blended aromatic materials to enhance emotional well-being.
Our web-based training focuses on teaching the science of scent to improve cognition, offering a non-invasive and holistic approach to wellness.
How It Works
- Aromas stimulate the olfactory nerve, which is directly connected to the limbic system — the part of the brain that handles memory and emotion.
- Specific scents can evoke personal memories, reduce anxiety, and create calming environments.
- Scent therapy is ideal for those experiencing isolation, cognitive challenges, or the need for emotional grounding.
The Power of Memory and Smell
I often find myself in my “scent playground,” experimenting with aromatic materials. My father had an incredible collection of scents, and when he hugged me, it was an olfactive emotional roller coaster. Those fragrances instantly bring memories flooding back.
- Memory Recall: Smells can trigger emotional memories more vividly than images or sounds.
- Emotional Connection: A familiar scent can create presence with loved ones, even if only for a moment.
- Creative Escape: Crafting aromas allows me to connect with memories and emotions while exploring new creative spaces.
Creating a Signature Aroma
Developing a scent isn’t just mixing ingredients — it’s storytelling through smell. While creating a new aroma for a client’s cozy den, I explored scents that evoke calm, mystery, and memory:
- Jasmine: A floral blend of jasmine, ylang ylang, and rose to create a soothing environment.
- Waffle: Captures burnt sugar, vanilla, and baked cookie notes for a comforting, nostalgic effect.
- Fresh Blue: Inspired by the Pacific Ocean, this scent evokes the calm, soothing emotions of waves and holidays.
“With a single whiff, I can smile, shed a tear, and remember my father — and then return to the world with renewed focus.” Explore the many custom signature scents we offer.
