Discover how Tracy Pepe’s TED Talk What the Nose Knows inspired Smelling Pink, Canada’s first scent therapy for dementia program—delivering profound care outcomes and a 49x ROI for senior homes.
The Forgotten Sense That Changes Lives
Eighteen months can change everything. My journey from TEDxOudMetha in Dubai to founding Smelling Pink, Canada’s first scent therapy for dementia program, began with a simple realization:
We underestimate our nose—and its power to heal, connect, and protect the brain.
In my TED Talk, What the Nose Knows, I shared how anosmia (loss of smell) and scent recognition are vital tools for diagnosing and supporting cognitive health. This story sparked a mission that became Smelling Pink—a program helping long-term care communities harness the science of scent.
From TEDx Dubai to the Birth of Smelling Pink
In October 2019, I spoke at TEDxOudMetha on scent design and mental health. My talk was deeply personal—rooted in my journey as a mother using essential oils to support a child on the autism spectrum.
That night, something unexpected happened:
- During rehearsals, global attendees whispered about a new virus that the WHO was monitoring.
- Alone in my hotel room, I researched COVID-19, my insomnia and anxiety heightening with each discovery.
- This intense emotional state reinforced what I teach: scent is a tool for cognitive and emotional regulation—and our noses are early warning systems for health.
The experience inspired me to create Smelling Pink, connecting scent therapy to wellness and cognitive care at a time when the world needed innovative tools for mental health.
Smelling Pink: Canada’s First Scent Therapy Program
Smelling Pink is a national movement bringing scent therapy into long-term care, dementia, and Alzheimer’s support.
Our Mission

- Implement scent therapy to reduce anxiety, improve memory, and enhance quality of life.
- Support research and families, offering non-invasive, evidence-based tools for care.
Our Impact So Far
- Supporting 650+ long-term care beds in Ontario.
- Expanded into British Columbia, with plans to move north and become fully bilingual.
- Helping families and care teams face dementia, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s with hope and tools that work.

- Anxiety and agitation reduction, helping residents sleep better and feel calmer.
- Social engagement that reduces isolation and health risks.
- Non-invasive, cost-effective care that complements medication and therapy.
