Discover the calming power of vetiver scent. Learn how this earthy aroma supports ADHD, reduces anxiety, and improves emotional balance.

Vetiver essential oil, known as the “oil of tranquility,” is a deep, earthy, and grounding aroma distilled from the roots of the Chrysopogon zizanioides grass. Grown mainly in India, Haiti, and Indonesia, vetiver is prized for its ability to calm the mind, sharpen focus, and restore emotional balance. Today, researchers and with the practice of scent therapy are exploring how this ancient oil may support conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, and depression.

What is Vetiver?

Vetiver has a rich, complex aroma with earthy, woody, and smoky undertones. Many people encounter pure vetiver for the first time and may find it unusual, especially if their only experience is with synthetic or commercial blends. These aromas often lack the depth and grounding qualities of true vetiver, which has been valued for centuries in perfumery and traditional wellness practices. In our scent therapy kits, I’ve crafted a unique blend that combines natural vetiver oil with patchouli, sandalwood, and cedarwood for a harmonious and grounding experience.

  • Earthy & Woody: Like damp soil after rain.
  • Smoky & Leathery: Especially in Haitian vetiver.
  • Green & Herbal: Rooty and grounding.
  • Sweet & Balsamic: Subtle resin-like notes.
  • Cool & Dry: A refreshing, calming finish.

Because of these qualities, perfumers across cultures call vetiver the ‘oil of tranquility.’ It is one of my favourite scents to work with—the depth and dimension are extraordinary. Like a fine Bordeaux in taste or a symphony to the ears, vetiver reveals a richness that is both timeless and complex.

Vetiver and the Mind

Vetiver’s grounding effect comes from its unique compounds—khusimol, vetiverol, and vetivone—which interact with the brain’s limbic system, the emotional center.

  • Grounding Effect: Reduces racing thoughts and mental chatter.
  • Parasympathetic Activation: Supports relaxation by shifting the nervous system into rest-and-digest mode.
  • Attention Stabilization: Encourages focus while easing overstimulation.

Vetiver and ADHD Studies

One notable study by Dr. Terry Friedman (2001–2003) examined the impact of essential oils on children with ADHD.

  • Oils tested: Lavender, cedarwood, and vetiver.
  • Method: Inhalation through diffuser or direct sniffing.
  • Results: Vetiver was most effective, helping reduce inattention and improve focus.
  • Brain activity: Vetiver reduced theta brain waves (linked to daydreaming) while enhancing alertness.

While more research is needed, this study sparked ongoing interest in vetiver as a natural ADHD support.

Vetiver for Anxiety and Depression

Vetiver has also been studied for its mood-balancing effects:

  • Animal studies: Showed vetiver has anti-anxiety and antidepressant-like effects, likely via serotonin and GABA pathways.
  • Scent Therapy: At Smelling Pink our scent therapy  trials suggest inhalation may lower stress, agitation, and tension.
  • Ayurveda tradition: Used for centuries to cool and stabilize emotional unrest, particularly restlessness, anger, or sadness.
