Why Essential Oils Matter in Scent Therapy

Why Essential Oils Matter in Scent Therapy

Discover why essential oils are key to scent therapy. Explore their benefits, industry facts, and how Smelling Pink blends art, science, and wellness.

Why Are Essential Oils So Important?

In the world of scent therapy, these aromatic compounds provide rich, natural ingredients that not only smell beautiful but offer profound emotional impact. My journey into essential oils began over 35 years ago, and through Smelling Pink, I’ve transformed that expertise into programs that enhance wellness, especially for seniors and those living with dementia.

What Are Essential Oils?

The Roots of My Journey

My discovery of essential oils began in aesthetics school and evolved while studying in Aachen, Germany, where I was introduced to perfumery. I was fortunate to learn under the legendary Anne Roebuck, an internationally respected educator in aromatherapy.

Later, I worked with professional nose Stephen V. Dowthwaite—experts like him formulate fragrances at the highest level. While I don’t call myself a highly trained perfumer (NOSE), I am a perfumer. I do formulate and I have been doing this for decades, however my expertise lies in translating scent into emotion and experience.

Essential Oils vs Synthetic Aromas

There’s a myth that natural is always better. In truth:

  • Many essential oils contain the same compounds found in synthetics.
  • Naturals are expensive, inconsistent, and sensitive to environmental changes.
  • Synthetics allow us to ensure quality, consistency, and cost-efficiency.
  • The science shows aromatic molecules do not contain allergens.

At Smelling Pink, we blend pure essential oils and safe aroma molecules. For example:

  • The scent I created for Samsung stores was stabilized with synthetics.
  • My signature scent “Fresh Blue” was inspired by the Pacific Ocean but recreated with aroma molecules for consistency.

The Art and Science of Perfumery

Perfumery is more than smelling good—it’s chemistry, psychology, and storytelling. Whether crafting a signature scent for the InterContinental Barclay in New York or working with retail environments, the secret lies in knowing how to balance essential oils with aroma chemicals.

My Favorite Aroma Chemical or scent – Rholiate by Symrise, with its metallic finish, is one of my favorites—it illustrates just how creative and technical scent design can be.

FAQs About Essential Oils

What is the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?

Essential oils are natural plant extracts. Fragrance oils are either synthetic or blended with essential oils to mimic specific aromas.

Are scents safe for seniors or people with dementia?

Yes, when used properly. Our scent therapy programs at Smelling Pink are designed with safety and effectiveness in mind.

Why do you use synthetics if naturals are “better”?

This is a myth. Naturals are beautiful but inconsistent. Synthetics offer control, affordability, and stability without compromising the experience. We use both and we work with the research to understand the impact scent has on the mind.
