Discover why smell is a powerful tool in sensory design and wellness. Explore how scent therapy and branding enhance memory, mood, and healing.
Introduction: Why Smell Deserves More Attention
The sense of smell is often underestimated—yet it may be the most influential of all our senses. Smell impacts memory, mood, behavior, and emotional well-being. It bypasses rational processing and travels straight to the limbic system, the part of the brain responsible for emotion and memory.
Whether in a branded environment or a long-term care facility, scent plays a critical role in shaping how we feel and what we remember. In my 35-year career, I’ve worked with architects, corporations, and healthcare organizations to elevate experiences through intentional scent design.
Today, I carry this work forward through Smelling Pink, a scent therapy initiative that trains long-term care teams to support individuals—especially those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s—using therapeutic aromas. I’ve also created a web-based training platform to share this knowledge with professionals and caregivers across sectors.

The Power of Scent in Branding
Scent is a silent but powerful brand ambassador. While visuals and sound may grab attention, it’s scent that creates emotional connection and long-term memory recall. Our brains store olfactory information in a way that’s directly tied to experiences—making it an incredibly effective tool in branding and marketing.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked with iconic companies like McDonald’s, Hyatt Hotels, Samsung, and Cineplex, helping them understand how to layer scent into customer experiences. From the smell of fresh coffee and warm pastries to signature aromas in hotel lobbies, scent defines identity in a way no other sense can.
These insights have allowed me to teach professionals across industries—from interior designers to retail strategists—how to use scent as part of a broader multi-sensory branding approach.
Sensory Design: The 1 + 1 = 3 Principle
The concept of 1 + 1 = 3 is central to multi-sensory design. It suggests that when you combine two or more sensory stimuli—like scent and sound, or touch and taste—the experience becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
In my keynote presentations at IIDEX Canada, BOND Events, TED, and Informa, I’ve explored how this concept can:
- Enhance emotional resonance in brand campaigns
- Improve memory retention in educational settings
- Increase dwell time and satisfaction in retail
- Support healing and comfort in healthcare environments
By teaching this principle, I help professionals integrate scent not as an afterthought, but as a strategic element.
Case Study: Déjà Vu at IIDEX Canada
One of my most powerful experiences as a scent designer was curating Déjà Vu, a multi-sensory exhibit commissioned by IIDEX Canada.
This immersive installation was built around:
- 4 custom scent compositions
- 4 unique soundtracks
- Taste pairings
- Original artwork created by a local painter
The outcome? Emotional reactions, deep memory recall, and meaningful dialogue around the role of scent in our lives. Many visitors described the experience as deeply nostalgic—some even cried. It became a living proof of how scent design can tap into identity, memory, and emotion.
Scent Therapy in Healthcare Settings
Today, I apply the same sensory design principles in healthcare environments, especially long-term care homes and dementia wards.
These spaces have embraced visual upgrades—bright murals, nature-inspired themes, and familiar décor—but they are often missing the olfactory layer, which is essential to a complete sensory healing experience.
How Scent Therapy Supports Healing
- Reduces anxiety and fear in Alzheimer’s and dementia patients
- Stimulates appetite with pre-meal scents like citrus or herbs
- Triggers memory recall from early life using culturally familiar aromas
- Improves sleep through calming oils like lavender or bergamot
Smelling Pink: A Training Model for Wellness Design
Through Smelling Pink, I’ve built a scent therapy program that offers more than just products—it provides training, data collection, and support for care teams. Our program has reached over 650 long-term care beds across Canada, and the results are both measurable and deeply human.
I created a web-based training platform to make this knowledge accessible to healthcare professionals, recreation staff, and caregivers. This digital training ensures that:
- Staff understand how scent affects cognition and mood
- Scents are applied safely and effectively
- Data is collected to support research and funding requests
Our goal? To help integrate scent as a core wellness intervention, not a luxury.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is scent therapy?
Scent therapy is the intentional use of aromatic compounds to support emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being. It is especially effective in dementia care, anxiety reduction, and routine reinforcement.
Can scent therapy be taught?
Absolutely. Smelling Pink offers web-based, hands-on training for staff in long-term care, supported by proven frameworks and guided kits.
Is this backed by research?
Yes. Ongoing studies support how essential oils like lavender, rosemary, and citrus blends impact memory, behavior, and sleep—especially for seniors with cognitive challenges.
Is scent therapy affordable for care homes?
Yes. Smelling Pink’s model is cost-effective, scalable, and eligible for funding under Ontario’s Wellness Resident Grant. We also offer grant-writing support for homes wishing to implement the program at no cost.
