Mummification = Prayer / Meditation = Calm Brain Activity – this is the foundation of scent science, long before AI or modern neuroscience.

For thousands of years, humans have used aroma to focus the mind, calm the nervous system, and connect body, mind, and spirit. At Smelling Pink, we combine ancient wisdom and modern research, helping people harness scent for focus, emotional regulation, and memory support. Vetiver is one of our most powerful aromas, available in our Intake Kit and Full Scent Science Kit.

Mummification and Perfume Origins

Scientific studies analyzed 35 mummy samples spanning 2,000 years, identifying 81 volatile organic compounds in fats, oils, beeswax, plant resins, and bitumen. These aromas were sacred, used in mummification to guide the soul, purify the body, and create a bridge between the earthly and divine.

The Latin root of perfume, per – fumum, literally means “through smoke” – scent traveling skyward as a prayer.

How Scent Impacts the Brain

Scent travels directly to the limbic system, bypassing the thalamus, activating emotion and memory in under a second. Olfactory receptors in the nose detect aroma molecules and signals travel to the olfactory bulb. This Immediate routing goes to the amygdala (emotion) and hippocampus (memory). This explains why aromas like vetiver can instantly calm the mind, improve focus, and support memory.
